Quill is a word processor that keeps one document in step between this Mac, newer Macs, iPhones and the web - with offline editing, version history and spell-check. Find yours:
Quill Classic 68k - System 7 and up A 1.4M floppy holding Quill, already pointed at the server. Quill Drive has its own 68k floppy, linked above. Made for System 7, and it runs on Mac OS 8 and 9 and in Tiger's Classic environment too. One universal disk: it detects the Mac's own processor at launch, so a Mac Plus and a Quadra use the same Quill floppy. Sync Clock has its own floppy, linked above. The floppy is a Disk Copy image wrapped in MacBinary, which is what lets it survive the trip through a web server with its file type intact. Netscape and Internet Explorer unpack it as it arrives, so you should be left with a Disk Copy image: open it with Disk Copy to mount it, and drag Quill to your hard disk. Only if you are left with a file ending in .img.bin (an older browser, or a download manager) drop it on StuffIt Expander first.
System requirements: System 7 or later, MacTCP or Open Transport,
and a floppy drive (or a way to mount the disk image). Quill Drive Classic 68k - System 7 and up The separate Quill Drive floppy syncs a folder with your Quill account. It runs on the same 68k Macs as Quill. Open the image in Disk Copy (decode a leftover .img.bin with StuffIt Expander first), then drag Quill Drive to your hard disk. Both floppies carry their own server configuration. System requirements: the same as Quill Classic 68k above: System 7 or later, MacTCP or Open Transport, a 68000 Mac with 4 MB of RAM at the least. Enough free hard disk space for the folder you sync. Quill Classic PPC - Mac OS 9 Quill and Quill Drive built for PowerPC itself, so they run without 68k emulation, with every spelling dictionary beside them. Both sign in and sync over Open Transport. They need Apple's CarbonLib 1.6 or later: Mac OS 9.1 and 9.2 usually have it; on 9.0 to 9.0.4, search for "CarbonLib 1.6" (Macintosh Garden keeps a copy) and run its installer. Tested on 9.0.4; 8.6 should work but has not been tried. Mac OS 8.1 cannot run them at all - on 8.1, use Quill Classic 68k. To install another dictionary on Mac OS 9, move its file into the same folder as Quill and restart Quill. The CD already places all eight full word lists there; they appear under Edit > Language. System requirements: a PowerPC Mac running Mac OS 9 (tested on 9.0.4), Open Transport, Apple's CarbonLib 1.6 or later, and a CD drive or a way to mount the disc image. The download is a zipped CD image: unzip it, then burn it to a CD or mount it in an emulator. A Mac OS 8 or 9 Mac cannot open a Mac OS X disk image, which is why this edition comes on a disc. Quill Early PPC Mac OS X - 10.0 to 10.5 The same PowerPC builds of Quill and Quill Drive, for Mac OS X. Open the disk image and drag Quill.app and Quill Drive.app to Applications. All eight dictionaries and the starting server settings are inside the app packages. Login, identity and preferences stay in the System's Preferences folder when you update an app. It does not need the Classic environment or StuffIt Expander. Tested on 10.0 and Tiger; the other releases in this range have not yet been tried. System requirements: a PowerPC Mac (G3, G4 or G5) running Mac OS X 10.0 to 10.5 (tested on 10.0 and Tiger), and a network connection. No Classic environment needed. Quill Complete - every edition on one CD One disc with a folder for each edition - Quill Classic 68k, Quill Classic PPC and Quill Early PPC Mac OS X - and all eight spelling dictionaries. It is a plain HFS disc, so System 7 can read it as well as Mac OS 8, 9 and X. The ZIP needs unzipping first; the ISO is ready for a direct URL in Infinite Mac. Burn or mount the disc, then drag your edition's folder to your hard disk. System requirements: a CD drive, or a way to mount the disc image. The disc itself reads on System 7 and later, but each edition inside has its own requirements, listed above - check the one you are installing. Utilities: Sync Clock Sync Clock sets a classic Mac's clock over the network at startup, for a Mac whose PRAM battery has given out. Needs no Quill account. System 7-9, any 68k or PowerPC Mac. Its own floppy, installed the same way as Quill Classic 68k's; Quill Complete carries it too. System requirements: System 7 to Mac OS 9 and a network connection (MacTCP or Open Transport), on any 68k or PowerPC Mac. Coming soon

Each language carries its own license, published beside its word list (LICENSE-<language>.txt next to the .dict file) - German, French, Italian, Dutch and Spanish are each independent projects under their own terms, not the permissive one the three English dictionaries share. Quill: write anywhere, sync everywhere. A Mac Plus and a modern iPhone - or a browser in your pocket - can share the same page. Coming soon: Quill in a box. Real floppies and CDs, boxed, for every Mac from System 7 to Mac OS X. |
